"Color Recognition Batting" Drill

This drill comes from Ryan Souza our November 2003 Drill of the Month Winner.

Equipment:

  1. Equal amount of JUGS Dimpled Yellow and White Softballs
  2. JUGS Pitching Machine

Have the batters enter batter's box and instruct them to hit only yellow or white balls. The coach's job is to place yellow and white softballs in their mitt with the back of the glove facing the batter. This is to insure that the balls remain hidden in the mitt until the ball is released.

The coach will wait until the batter is set, then the softballs will be placed into the JUGS Pitching Machine quickly to avoid cheating by the batter. The coach will try to "fake out" the hitter into hitting the wrong color.

This drill really helps to get the batters to focus on release point. It also helps determine the ball rotation in games.

This dill can also be done with multiple hitters on deck. Once the wrong color is hit then the next batter in line will step up to home plate.
