Around the Infield

September 2008

By: Marc Butterick

Haven't read all your drills, but I haven't seen this one listed yet, so I thought I'd pass it along. I used this as a good warm-up to begin practice.

Two players go to second base, two players go to first base, two players go to catcher (behind home plate) and the rest of the players go to shortstop position. The coach hits a grounder to the first player in line at shortstop; they make a play to first, and the first baseman throws the ball home. The coach hits another grounder to shortstop (same player) and they flip to second base; and the second baseman throws to first (turning a double play), and first throws home. The first player at shortstop then sprints to right field, and another coach (usually standing on the mound) throws a leading pop fly to right field. The player fields and throws home. The first shortstop goes to the backup position behind second. The first second baseman goes to the backup position at first. The first first baseman goes to the backup position at catcher, and the first catcher goes to the end of the line at shortstop. Rotate as many times as necessary for warm-up or skills development.
